Halloween Costumes

About This Project

Sewing Halloween costumes was one of the first reasons I got into sewing; I wanted my costumes to be authentic-ish. To that end, I began by taking a Guess yellow plaid jacket and skirt combo, and cropping it to resemble Cher’s iconic plaid outfit from Clueless. It was less sewing and more “adjusting.”

The next Halloween, I decided to make Jem’s outfit from Jem and the Holograms, another classic and totally bonkers cartoon from my youth. For this dress, I used a wrap dress pattern from the 90s.

The following Halloween after that was 2020, the year of COVID, and no parties were had, but I worked on recreating Phyllis Nefler’s transformed Wildnerness Girl troop leader ensemble. I used a recreated blazer pattern from the 1940s – which did not include a belt, as you can see by how the fabric bunches at the waist – and a basic pencil skirt pattern.
